1. Where to buy an IC card in Kyoto

In Kyoto, “ICOCA” sells as an IC card.

You can buy the ICOCA from the ticket vending machines of the JR, City Subway, Keihan Railway , Hankyu Railway, and Kintetsu Railway station.

(You can use the ICOCA not only in Kyoto but also in all over the major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Hiroshima and Hakata.)

Not all of ticket machines sell the IC card, ICOCA.
You can buy only from machines displaying “ICOCA” logo (Subway, Keihan railway, Hankyu railway) or “IC card” letter (JR line), so please be careful.

For example, the pictures below are the ticket machins of Kyoto City Subway.
The Only left ones displaying ICOCA logo (or partially colored pink) sell the IC card.

And, the picture below is the ticket machines of JR line.
Only machines displaying “IC card” letter sell ICOCA.

Please note that those ticket vending machines do not sell ICOCA for a child.

You need to buy it at the ticket office near the vending achines.

2. How to buy an IC card in Kyoto

If you plan to buy an IC card in Kyoto, the Kyoto City Subway and JR stations are convenient because the number of the ticket machines is relatively large, and easy to find out.

If you are near Keihan railway or Hankyu railway station, ofcourse it’s OK to buy at each staion.

The followings are the purosedure to buy from ticket vending machines of City Subway, JR, Keihan railway and Hankyu railway station.

2-1 Kyoto City Subway

This is the procedure to buy the IC card, ICOCA at Kyoto City Subway station.

 1. Find out the ticket machine
displaying “ICOCA” logo or colored pink

2. Press “English” button
to change language

3. Select
“English” button

4. Press “Card” button
(displaying ICOCA logo)

5. Press
“ICOCA” button                            

6. Insert money and press
“2000” (¥2000), that’s all !

2-2 JR line

Here is the procedure to buy the IC card, ICOCA at the JR ticket machines.

 ♦ Type 1 ♦ 

1. Find out the ticket machine
displaying “IC card” letter

2. Press “English” button located left side of the screen to change language

3. Press
“Purchase ICOCA” button

4. Press
“¥2000” button

5. Insert money,
that’s all

Next, other type of the JR ticket machine.

 ♦ Type 2 ♦ 

1. Find out the ticket machine
displaying “IC card” letter,
and press “English” button

2. Press “English” button again

3. Press
“Purchase ICOCA” button

4. Choose and Press
“¥1,000 to ¥10,000” button

5. Insert money for the amount you select,
that’s all

2-3 Keihan Railway

Here is the procedure to buy the ICOCA at the Keihan railway ticket machines.

1. Find out the ticket machines
colored green and displaying ICOCA logo.

2. Press “English” button
to change the language

3. Press
“Card” button

4. press
“ICOCA” button

5. Insert money,
now you can get it!

2-4 Hankyu Railway

Here is the procedure to buy the ICOCA at the Hankyu railway ticket machines.

1. Find out the ticket machines
colored purple and displaying ICOCA logo.

2. press
“Buy ICOCA” button

3. Insert money,
now you can get it!
