1. Overview

You can go to Arashiyama by JR Train or by Bus from Kyoto station.

Arashiyama is located in the west of Kyoto city.

The distance from Kyoto Station is 6.8 mile.

 Local Bus more than 45 min
 Taxi  : 35 min
 Bicycle  : about 1 hour

You need more time and taxi fare on peak season because of heavy traffic jam.

 Near Bus Stops & Time to Togetsukyo Bridge (the center of Arashiyama)

(1)  walk 1 min from Arashiyama or Arashiyama-Koen (park) bus stop

(2)  walk 2 min from Randen (Keifuku) Arashiyama Station (Arashiyama Tenryuji-mae) bus stop

 Near Stations & Time to Togetsukyo Bridge 

(1)  walk 2 min from  Arashiyama Station (Keifuku Railway, Randen)

(2)  walk 5 min from Arashiyama Station (Hankyu Railway)

(3)  walk 12 min from Saga-Arashiyama Station (JR line)

Please note that…

to visit Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, stations operated by Keifuku Railway (Randen) and Hankyu Railway are nearer than JR station.

But, from Kyoto station, you have to change trains at least 3 times, and it takes more fare if you go there by way of Randen or Hankyu railway line.

So, the JR line is recommended.

2. By JR Train

If you take JR train (Sagano line) for Arashiyama, it will save time to move.

It takes just 16 minutes by local train or 12 minutes by rapid train from Kyoto station.

The trains depart from track 32 or 33 at Kyoto station, operate almost every 15 minutes.

The fare is ¥240.

It takes about 12 minutes walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama station to Togetsukyo Buridge, the center of Arashiyama.

2-1 The Way to the Center of Arashiyama Area from JR Saga-Arashiyama station

JR Saga-Arashiyama station is located a little bit away from the center of Arashiyama area such as Arashiyama Park or Togetsukyo Bridge. (But just 12 minutes’ walk)

So I’ll show you one of the ways from JR Saga-Arashiyama station.

1. Get out of the South Exit at JR Saga-Arashiyama Station

2. Keep Walking along the Street

3. Before Keifuku Railway Crossing, Turn Right.

4. Walk Straight in 5 minutes, Turn Left at the end (before Tenryuji temple)

5. Go past the Randen (Keifuku Railway) Arashiyama Station, Finally Togetsukyo Bridge !

3. Only By Bus

From Kyoto station to Arashiyama, Kyoto City Bus No28, and Kyoto Bus No.72, 73, 76, 77, 83 and 86 are available (Acctually, Kyoto Bus No.73 is mainly operated).

It takes about at least 45 minutes, and the fare is ¥230 by any bus routes.

Kyoto City Bus and Kyoto Bus are different companies.
(Kyoto City Bus is colored green, Kyoto Bus is colored brown.)

But, both compnies cooperate the operation so that the buses come every 10 minutes by turns at the same bus stop in Kyoto station bus terminal.

So, you can ride any buses above.

Kyoto CIty Bus and Kyoto Bus, and Arashiyama area are covered by Bus One-Day Pass (¥700). But, Unfortunately, this pass will discontinued at the end of September 2023. So, Trains is better than bus because it avoids congestion and delays.

Please note that…

it takes much more time on peak season because of heavy traffic jam.

∗ Peak season : cherry blossam (the end of March to the beginning of April), autumn leaves (November) and consecutive holidays in Japan (the end of April to the beginning of May)

When you ride, which bus stop in Kyoto Station can you ride those buses for Arashiyama ?

Please find out the bus stop displayed  C6  …

for Kyoto City Bus No.28 and Kyoto Bus No.72, 73, 76, 77, 83 and 86.

Actually all bus services for Arashiyama depart from the same bus stop  C6 .
It’s easy to ride.

You can use Bus One-day Pass for both Kyoto City Bus & Kyoto Bus. (Unfortunately, this Bus One-day Pass will be discontinued at the end of September 2023!)

3-2 Bus Stops Information near Togetsukyo Bridge, Arashiyama

If you ride Kyoto City Bus No.28, please get off at Arashiyama-Koen bus stop (meaning Arashiyama Park in Japanese).

And if you ride Kyoto Bus No.73 or ohtersArashiyama bus stop is the nearest to the Togetsukyo Bridge.
