1. Overview

Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of the most popular attractions not only in Kyoto but also in Japan for tourists.

The most famous spot in the shrine is the “Senbon Torii”, meaning thousands of Torii gates.

Actually, this shrine has about ten thousands Torii gates from the main shrine (hall) to the mountain behind.

The beautiful contrast between vermilion color of  the gates and green color of  trees are very attractive.

You can easily visit Gion area, Shijo Kawaramachi (city center), Sanjusangendo Temple or Shimogamo Jinja Shrine by Keihan Railway after visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine.

If you don’t mind walking, you can also visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Heianjingu Shrine or Kyoto Imperial Palace by Keihan Railway, and Arashiyama or Nijo Castle by JR line.

Fushimi Inari Shrine is located in the Southeast of Kyoto city.

The distance from Kyoto Station is  1.9 mile (3 km).

You need more time and taxi fare on peak season because of heavy traffic jam.

2. By Train (JR)

From Kyoto Station to Fushimi Inari Shrine, JR train is the best way to move.

It takes about just 5 minutes, the fare is low, ¥150, compared with bus fare ¥230, and Fushimi Inari Shrine is just in front of JR Station.

You can visit on schedule even on peak seoson such as New Year holidays, late March, early April, November or Japanese holidays. (Actually this shrine is one of the most popular attractions in Kyoto so that it is always crowded !)

The nearest station for Fushimi Inari Shrine is Inari Station on JR Nara line .

The followings are the detail.

2-1 From Kyoto Station to Inari Station

1. Take JR Nara line to Inari Station.

At Kyoto Station, take JR Nara line trains (departing from track No.8, 9 or 10). 

Usually only local trains stop Inari Station. (on peak season such as New Year holidays, cherry blossom or autumn leaves, Rapid train sometimes may stop Inari station)

The local trains are usually operated about 4 times per hour.

In 5 minutes, trains arrive at Inari Station.

2. Get off at Inari Station

At JR Inari station, please head for exit located the center of the platform No.2 where you just get off.

3. Exit of JR Inari Station

At JR Inari station, please head for exit located the center of the platform No.2 where you just get off.

The exit is only one, so you can’t miss it !

2-2  From Inari Station to Fushimi Inari Shrine

When you get out of the JR Inari Station exit, Fushimi Inari shrine is just in fron of you.

From the station, it takes 3 minutes’ walk to the main shrine (hall), and about 7 minutes’ walk to the most popular place called “Senbon Torii” in Japanese, meaning thousands of Torii gates in English.

For your reference, the followings show the way to the main shrine (hall) of Fushimi Inari Shrine.

1. Walk toward the Torii gate on your left.

After getting out of the JR Inari Station, walk torward the Torii gate on your left.

Soon, you come to the two-storied main gate. The main shrine (hall) is located behind the gate.

3. By Bus

If you plan to visit from Kyoto station to Fushimi Inari Shrine by bus, Kyoto City Bus No. South 5  is available.

It takes about 16 minutes.
This bus is operated almost every 30 minutes in the daytime, so it is still better to go by train than by bus!

The followings are the details.

 No.South 5  : 16 minutesevery 30 minutes (6:40 a.m. to 9:20 p.m.)

There used to be an express type bus No.105, but it is now out of service.

Please note that…

it may takes more time on peak season because of heavy traffic jam.

Peak season : cherry blossam (late March to early April), autumn leaves (November) and consecutive holidays in Japan (late April to early May)

3-1 Bus Stop Information at Kyoto Station

This bus stop is located in the north side of Kyoto Station, between Kyoto Tower and Kyoto Station.

3-2 From near Bus Stop to Fushimi Inari Shrine

The bus stop that you get off is Inari Taisha-mae bus stop.

Inari Taisha-mae bus stop is located a little bit away from Fushimi Inari Shrine compared with JR Inari station.

From the bus stop, it takes about 7 minutes’ walk to main shrine (hall) of Fushimi Inari Shrine.

The followings show the way to the shrine from the bus stop.

1. After Getting off, Turn left at the Intersection ahead.

After getting off the bus, please walk to forward direction, and turn left at the first intersection having a convenient store on the corner.

2. Cross the Keihan Railway Crossing.

Cross the Keihan Railway Crossing which is also station (Keihan Fushimi Inari), and keep walking along the street.

3. Cross the JR line Crossing & Torii gate ahead.

Then, Cross another Crossing (JR line) and go through Torii gate located at the next intersection ahead.

This is the Torii gate located at the next intersection.

4. Finally, main shrine (hall) of Fushimi Inari Shrine !

In 2 minutes from the first Torii gate, you come to Fushimi Inari Shrine.
