1. Overview
How to get to Arashiyama area from Ginkakuji Temple ?
You can go by Kyoto City Bus + Keifuku Railway (Randen) .
Or… “Kyoto City Bus + JR line” is also available depend on your destination in Arashiyama area.
The recommended way to Arashiyama area from Ginkakuji temple (silver pavilion) is “by Bus + Keifuku Railway”.
You can also go “by Bus + JR line”, depending on yourfirst destination in Arashiyama.
There is no direct bus service available between Ginkakuji and Arashiyama.
The map below is the overview of the routes, stops, time and fare.
From Ginkakuji Temple (silver pavilion) to Arashiyama, firstly please head for Ginkakuji-michi bus stop.
Actually, from Ginkakuji Temple, there are 2 near bus stops, Ginkakuji-mae and Ginkakuji-michi.
Only Ginkakuji-michi bus stop has buses to transfer for trains (both Randen & JR ) to Arashiyama.
It takes about 8 minutes’ walk from the gate of Ginkakuji Temple.
Check the map below, showing the location of the bus stop for Arashiyama via Keifuku Railway (Randen) or JR line .
♦ For Keifuku Railway (randen) : take Bus No.203 (or No.102 if weekends & holidays.)
♦ For JR line : take Bus No.203
Both destinations are the same bus, and depart from Ginkakuji-michi bus stop “C“.
If you don’t decide the first place to visit in Arashiyama yet, please use via Keifuku Railway (randen).
The reason is that the arrival station of the Randen is more convenient for major spots in Arashiyama, such as Togetsukyo Bridge or Bamboo Forest.
By Bus + Kiefuku Railway (Randen) , it takes, for example, 1 hour & 20 minutes from Ginkakuji Temple to Togetsukyo Bridge, the center and symbol of Arashiyama area, including average walking, waiting and transfer time.
It takes 8 minutes’ walk to Ginkakuji-michi bus stop, at least 28 minutes’ bus ride (¥230) to Kitano-hakubaicho station and 27 minutes’ train ride to Arashiyama station.
If you plan firstly to ride trolley train or visit Daikakuji Temple, via JR line is recommened.
(If you have Japan Rail Pass, JR line is fine, too)
By Bus + JR line , it takes, in total, about 1 hour & 10 – 20 minutes from Ginkakuji to Togetsukyo Bridge.
8 minutes’ walk to Ginkakuji-michi bus stop, 32 minutes’ bus ride to Enmachi station, and 7 minutes’ train ride to Saga-Arashiyama station plus 12 minutes’ walk to Togetsukyo Bridge.

2. By Bus + Keifuku Railway (Randen) for Arashiyama
2-1 By Bus : From Ginkakuji-michi Bus stop to Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta.
From Ginkakuji temple to Arashiyama via Randen (Keifuku Railway) Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta., it takes in total about 1 hour & 20 minutes including average waiting and walking time.
Buses for Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta. depart from Ginkakuji-michi bus stop C.
The bus stop C is located on your left side of Imadegawa street after crossing Shirakawa street, when you come to from Ginkakuji temple. (please refer to the map in precious section)
Please ride Kyoto City Bus No. 203 (or No.102 if weekends & holidays.)
They are operated almost 6 to 7 times per hour in the daytime.
1. Take Bus No.203 (or No.102) at Ginkakuji-michi Bus Stop C.
After getting out of Ginkakuji Temple, walk straight in 8 minutes until you come to Shirakawa Street.
And, cross the street. Then, you can see Ginkakuji-michi bus stop C at the left (south) side of the Imadegawa street.
(Please go pass the nearest bus stop, Ginkakuji-mae on the way, because Bus No.203 (& No.102) don’ t come.)
2. Get off at Kitano-Hakubaicho Bus Stop, and Transfer.
In at least 28 minutes by bus, get off at Kitano-Hakubaicho bus stop.
Bus No. 203 arrive at Bus Stop D.

After getting off from bus No.203 , please head for backward direction.
And, the station is located at the opposite side of the bus stop.
If you ride bus No.102 , the bus stop is just next to the station!

2-2 By Randen : From Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta. to Arashiyama
From Kitano-Hakubaicho station to Arashiyama, please ride Keifuku Railway (Randen).
All trains don’t go to Arashiyama directly.
You need to change trains at Katabiranotsuji Station.
But, don’t worry, all trains departing from Kitano-Hakubaicho station are bound for Katabiranotsuji Station.
So you just get off at the last station to transfer.
The name of the Randen station in Arashiyama area you finally get off is also Arashiyama.
The followings are the details.
1. Take any Trains at Randen Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta.
All trains are bound for Katabiranotsuji station where you need to tranfer for Arashiyama.
So please ride any trains.
2. Change Trains at Katabiranotsuji Sta.
In 11 minutes’ ride, the trains arrive at Katabiranotsuji station (Track No.3 or No.4).
This station is the last stop of trains from Kitano-Hakubaicho station, so it is easy when you transfer.
Trains bound for Arashiyama depart from track No.1, located next platform of track No. 3 and 4.
So please move.
Usually trains bound for Arashiyama arrive in 8 minutes after you get off the train from Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta.
So, it is enough time to transfer.

3. Trains arrive at Arashiyama Sta. in 8 minutes
In 8 minutes’ ride, the trains arrive at Arashiyama station (the last stop).
3. By Bus + JR train for Arahiyama
3-1 By Bus : From Ginkakuji-michi Bus Stop to Enmachi Sta.
If you go to Arashiyama from Ginkakuji via JR line, please ride Kyoto City Bus No. 203 , departing from Ginkakuji-michi bus stop C, the same bus stop for Randen Kitanohakubaicho Sta. as I explained in previous section.
Bus No. 203 is operated almost every 10 to 12 minutes in the daytime.
In about 30 minutes’ ride, please get off at Nishinokyo-Enmachi bus stop to transfer JR line.
The followings are the details.
1. Ride Buses at Ginkakuji-michi Bus Stop C.
For Arashiyama via JR Enmachi Sta., take Kyoto City Bus No. 203 . from Ginkakuji-michi bus stop C.
This bus is the same one for Randen Kitano-Hakubaicho Sta..
2. Get off at Nishinokyo-Enmachi Bus Stop, and Transfer.
In about 30 minutes’ ride, buses arrive at Nishinokyo-Enmachi bus stop.
The name of the bus stop is a little bit different from the JR station, just “Enmachi“.
After getting off the bus No.203, please walk to the forward direction.
JR Enmachi station is located southwest direction from the bus stop.
After getting off the bus, firstly, please head for the big intersection ahead, then the station is diagonally across from you.
It takes about 3 minutes from the Nishinokyo-Enmachi bus stop.
3-2 By JR (Sagano line) : From Enmachi Sta. to Arashiyama
From Enmachi station to Arashiyama, please ride JR line (Sagano line precisely).
At Enmachi station, both local and rapid type trains are available.
The name of the nearest JR station for Arashiyama area is Saga-Arashiyama.
Saga-Arashiyama station is the third stop from Enmachi station by local trains (next stop by rapid).
The followings are the details.
1. Take Any Trains Departing from Track No.2
Please ride on any trains departing from track No.2 (bound for Kameoka, Sonobe) at Enmachi station.
2. Get off at Saga-Arashiyama Station.
In 7 minutes, local trains arrive at Saga-Arashiyama station, the third stop from Enmachi station.
Please be careful that if you ride rapid train, next stop is Saga-Arashiyama, taking just 4 minutes.
3. Head for the South Gate for the center of Arashiyama area
After getting out of the ticket gate, if you firstly visit Bamboo Forest, Togetsukyo Bridge or trolley train, please head for the south gate.
If you visit Daikakuji temple, Jojakkoji temple or Adashinono Nenbutsuji temple, please head for the north gate.

This JR Saga-Arashiyama station is located a little bit away from the center of Arashiyama.
For example, it takes 12 minutes’ walk to Togetsukyo Bridge, a symbol of Arashiyama area.
