How to get to Nijo Castle from Arashiyama area ?

The recommended way to Nijo Castle from Arashiyama area is (1) by Keifuku Railway (Randen) + Kyoto City Subway, (2) by JR line + Walk or (3) by Bus

The map below is the overview of the routes, time and fare.

From Arashiyama to Nijo Castle, firstly please head for stations (Keifuku Railway (Randen) or JR line) or bus stop.

The locations of those stations and bus stop are separated, and station names are also a little bit different (Arashiyama: Keifuku Railway, Randen,  Saga-Arashiyama: JR Sagano line).

JR Saga-Arashiyama station is a little bit away from the center of Arashiyama area, for example, 12 minutes’ walk from Togetsukyo Bridge.

Randen Arashiyama station and Arahsiyama bus stop are near the center of Arashiyama area.

The ways of lower fare are by JR line or by bus. But you need more walk by JR line and more time by bus.

On the other hand, although the fare is ¥510 in total by Randen + Subway, you can move on schedule and the arrival station of the subway is just beside Nijo Castle.

So, please decide the travel way, considering also your last locaiton in Arashiyama.

By Kiefuku Railway (Randen), it takes 13 minutes ride (¥250).
Trains are operated almost every 10 minutes.
Transfer to Kyoto City Subway Tozai line at Randen Tenjingawa station (the name of the subway station is Uzumasa Tenjingawa)
From Tenjingawa Sta. to Nijo Castle, it takes 6 minutes by subway (¥260) plus 1 minute walk.

By JR line, it takes 9 minutes ride (¥200).
Trains are
 operated almost every 15 minutes.
From the arrival station (Nijo) to Nijo Castle, it takes 12 minutes’ walk
.

By Bus, it takes at least 34 minutes ride (¥230).
Buses are operated by Kyoto Bus, and almost every 20 minutes in the daytime.
From the arrival bus stop (Horikawa-Oike) to Nijo Castle, it takes 3 minutes’ walk.

2. By Keifuku Railway (Randen) + Kyoto City Subway for Nijo Castle

Keifuku Railway (Randen) Arashiyama station is located between Togetsukyo Bridge and Bamboo Forest.

It takes 2 minutes from the Togetsukyo Bridge, 5 minutes from the Bamboo Forest.

For Nijo Castle by Randen, you need to transfer at Randen-Tenjingawa station to Kyoto City Subway (Tozai line).

All trains depart from Arashiyama station go to Randen-Tenjingawa station.

The followings are the details.

1. Take any trains at Arashiyama Station.

For Nijo Castle, take any trains departing from Arashiyama station.

All trains are bound for Shijo-Omiya, near downtown area, and Randen-Tenjingawa station (transfer) is on the way.

2. Get off at Randen-Tenjingawa Station, and Transfer.

Please get off at Randen-Tenjingawa station, the 8th station from Arashiyama.

After getting off, head for forward direction, turn left, cross the crosswalk, then you can see the subway entrance on your left direction.

Go down the escalator from the entrance.

Then, you can see the Exit 3 on your right.
Keep going down, so you come to the ticket gate in front of you.

3. Take Any Trains at Subway Uzumasa- Tenjingawa Station

From Subway Uzumasa-Tenjingawa station, please take any early trains, because this station is the first station and all trains stop Nijojo-mae station, the nearest station to Nijo Castle.

Trains will depart from track No.1 or No.2.

4. Get off at Nijojo-mae Station

In 6 minutes, trains arrive at Nijojo-mae station

After getting out of the ticket gate, please head for Exit 1.

From the Exit 1, you can see Nijo Castle just in front of you.

3. By JR train + Walk for Nijo Castle

JR (Sagano line) Saga-Arashiyama station is located about 10 minutes’ walk to the east from Bamboo Forest.
It takes about 12 minutes’ walk from Togetsukyo Bridge, the symbol of Arasiyama area.

By JR line, the nearest station for Nijo Castle is Nijo.

At Saga-Arashiyama station, all trains bound for Kyoto station go and stop the nearest station, Nijo.

The followings are the details.

1. Take any Trains bound for Kyoto Station

Local and rapid type of trains are available at Saga-Arashiyama station.

The rapid train also stop the Nijo station, so please take any type of trains bound for Kyoto Station.

Normaly, the trains depart at track No.1 or 2.
Only trains that start from Saga-Arashiyama station depart at track No.4.

So, check the track by an electric noticeboard before riding.

2. Get off at Nijo Station, the 4th Station from Saga-Arashiyama

In 9 minutes by local trains, trains arrive at Nijo station, the fourth station from Saga-Arashiyama station.

If you ride rapid train, second stop is Nijo station, taking just 6 minutes.

3. After Getting out of the Ticket Gate, Turn Left.

When you get out of the tickete gate at Nijo station, please turn left, as the noticeboard indicates.

4. After Rotary, Turn Left.

Walk left side of the Taxi Rotary, and turn left again.

5. Next big Intersection, Turn Right.

Soon, you come to next intersection, then turn right.

6. Keep Walking in 10 minutes, along the Stone Wall on the way.

Please keep walking straight . On the way, you can see the stone wall of the Nijo Castle on your left.

In about 10 minutes, you come to the corner of the castle.

7. On the Corner of the Castle, Turn Left.

On the corner of the castle, please turn left.

Soon, you come to the entrance of Nijo Castle.

Ticket office is next to the main gate.

4. By Bus for Nijo Castle

Several Bus Stops are available in Arashiyama area.

Main bus stops are Arashiyama and Arashiyama-Koen (meaning Arashiyama Park), both located near Togetsukyo Bridge, the symbol of Arasiyama area.
Arashiyama bus stop is near the north side of the bridge, and Arashiyama-Koen bus stop is near the south  side of the bridge.

Buses for Nijo Castle from Arashiyama area are operated by Kyoto Bus.
Kyoto Bus is different from Kyoto City Bus. Kyoto Bus is colored brown.
If you have Subway & Bus One-Day Pass, you can also use for Kyoto Bus.

Please take Kyoto Bus No.  62  63  and  66 .  

The nearest bus stop for Nijo Castle is Horikawa-Oike.
It takes at least 34 minutes from Arashiyama.
It depends on the traffic condition.

1. Find out correct Bus Stops.

Arashiyama bus stop is in the north side of Togetsukyo Bridge.
Buses for Nijo Castle depart from bus stop B, located NOT river side but in front of souvenier shop building.

Arashiyama-Koen bus stop is in the south side of Togetsukyo Bridge.
Buses for Nijo Castle depart from the bus stop located in the west side of the road, in front of the public restroom (toilet).

2. Take Kyoto Bus No. 62, 63 or 66.

Take Kyoto Bus No. 62 ,  63  or  66 .

All buses run the same route.
It takes at least 34 minutes to the nearest bus stop for Nijo Castle.

On peak season such as cherry blossom and autumn leaves, it takes much more time.

3. Get off at Horikawa-Oike bus stop, and Go backward direction.

After getting off the bus at Horikawa-Oike, head for the big intersection behind.

4. Cross the Crosswalk and Turn Right, finally Nijo Castle.

Cross the crosswalk on the intersection, and turn right.

Then, you can see the corner of Nijo Castle.
It takes just a few minutes from Horikawa-oike bus stop.
